Math Fair Games and Bongo Painting

Firstly, I would like to say "welcome home" Caleb.  He was been visiting numerous countries in Africa for the past month,  we can't wait to hear about his adventures.  Each child came home with a bracelet today. It was from Caleb's African travels and was made by the Maasai people.

As we get closer to our Math Fair the students are beginning to master some of the problem solving games that they have learned.  Below are many pictures of the students playing Math games.  We have learned;
-Janus upside down
-Froggie Catcher
-The Grass is Greener on the Other Side
-Wolf Nim
-Touching circles
-Sudoku

I've also included pictures of the students each taking a turn to help paint our Mountain Bongo.  It is really starting to look like the real deal!

Welcome Norn!

Welcome Norn to our grade1 and 2 class!  Norn is our new student, he has just moved to Canada from Japan. Norn doesn't speak any English at all, our class is working to help Norn settle in and have new friends to play with at recess.  Norn's family prepared origami paper for the whole class and Norn helped to make a origami koala for everyone in our class.  Thank you!

SPECIAL THANK YOU!  Thank you Ian and Cindy Biggs (Tarrack's parents) who designed and built the Mountain Bongo that we will bring back to Zoo School with us.  They donated their time and the supplies to construct it, we are very grateful!

SPECIAL SNEAKY QUESTION- WHAT WILL OUR CLASS BE DOING TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE MOUNTAIN BONGO PROJECT?  The answer can be found in the updates below.  Write the answer in your agenda for a prize!

Literacy work has included:
-writing about the signs of Spring
-writing letters to grade 2 students in Iqaluit, Meteghan, and Saskatoon (the letters were mailed out tonight).
-writing about koalas and how human interactions can harm them.  We watched a video of a koala climbing into an air conditioned car and not wanting to leave it.
-writing about good and bad head weather (big and small problems and how we deal with them)

Math-
-Students have been working on recalling and ordering the days and months of a year.  They can look at the calendar on the back of their agenda to see how many days each month has.
-Math Fair is coming up in May.  Students have been learning how to play Math games in preparation for the Math Fair.  The grade 2s are LOVING sudoku.  Work on problem solving questions continues.

Social Studies - The communities early settlers
-Iqaluit- the Inuit were the first people to inhabit the area, they still make up the majority of the population.
-Meteghan- Settlers came from France but after settling along the Nova Scotia coast line the British forced them to pledge allegiance to the British Monarch or leave.  Many of the Acadian settlers went back to France and some went to areas like Louisiana.
-Saskatoon- Indigenous Peoples were the first people to inhabit the area.  Many settlers came from areas like the Ukraine.  They liked the area which was good for farming.

Science-
-Students have made clay boats that had to carry a load
-Students have made foil boats that had to carry rocks
-Students have made a cork boat using a keel to prevent it from tipping into the water

Gym- Basketball is our main focuss
