We have caterpillars!  Last week our class got 12 caterpillars to look after and watch grow.  We have been learning about the life cycle of the caterpillar and how long each stage lasts.  One of the caterpillars didn't make it through the weekend.  It's kind of neat though because we can compare it to  the remaining 11 to see how much they have grown.

In L.A / Social Studies we were learning about how Lusia Pavlychenko helped contribute to the community of Saskatoon.  To help us make sense of it we acted it out.  Boys and girls please tell your parents how we acted it out.  Hint, some of you were kids, some adults, 1 a teacher etc).  We also got to taste perogies a tasty Ukranian staple!  I think 21/22 students liked them!

In Math we are learning about 2D and 3D shapes.  Today we made out own cubes.  Tomorrow we will write about a cubes properties (faces, edges, corners).

An extra special thanks to Debbie, Tara, Naomi, and Judy for all of the hours you spent inventorying our guided reading collection!

Questions of the day:

How long does the caterpillar last in the caterpillar stage?
How long will it last in the chrysalis stage?
What is the final stage?

Children's Festival

Thank you to all of our wonderful parent volunteers!  We had a successful, entertaining and safe day at the Children's Festival.  We couldn't have done it without all of the parent support we had.  Students said their favorite parts were;
-face painting
-making puppets
-the C-train
-the story teller (Michael Kusugak)
-roping a cattle (chair)
-writing a birthday wish for Canada
-winning a beach ball
-playing lego
-having your portrait drawn

What was your favorite part?

Measuring and problem solving in Math. Learning about our names.

Firstly I need to apologize about the order of today's blog pictures.  They were inserted randomly and for the sake of time I'm not going to try to rearrange them.

All of EG kicked off today with a session of Math BINGO.  Each class in the school has a set of problem solving questions that are grade/age appropriate.  The object is to solve the Math question given within 15 minutes. I've posted a picture of the question from today (it's about David waiting in line).  Students from each class race to Mrs.Dann to let her know that our class has solved the question.  Today our class came in first in the school!!!!

In Social Studies and and Language Arts we read about a man named Abe Auktalik Okpik.  He was instrumental in helping the people of Iqaluit get their Inuit names back.  Student's completed a visual journal page about him.

In Math we used iPods to measure time.  Students were given an iPod and a buddy, they had to record themselves running bases, completing an obstacle course and running to the paved path and back.  We were working on telling the time using seconds and minutes ( 2:05 is 2 minutes 5 seconds and :35 is = to 36 seconds).  Do you remember who the fastest in the class was????

In Science we have begun a new unit on Small Flying and Crawling Insects.  Students got a choose a non-fiction book and begun to research an insect.

Blog Question:

How did your parents choose your name?

My name Gwen was chosen because it was strong, old fashion and not overly popular.  My middle name Katherine was both my Grandmas and my Moms.  Can you guess Grace's middle name?
