Math Links on Subitizing

We are continuing on our number sense and Mathematical literacy.  Here are a couple of links that work on subitizing. Subitizing is the ability to 'see' a small amount of objects and know how many there are without counting.  Have fun calling out the numbers!

Christmas Concert, Magnets and a Math Game

Good Evening!

We finally got strong enough magnets to conclude our science experiment!  We learned that some cereals have more iron than others and sometimes it's the big chunks of cereal that have more iron in them.

Some of us tried playing a new math game similar to connect 4 using dice.  The game helps us work on subitizing and adding 2 numbers quickly together.  Below is a picture of one of the game boards.  Each player would have their own game board to play with and play against a partner.

The pictures of the concert were taken at the dress rehearsal last Friday morning.

Sneaky question:

How can drawing detailed maps and sketches help you?

Charlotte's Web Day and Iron in Cereal

Thank you for all of your support today!  Although Christmas is just around the corner today was all about Wilbur and Charlotte!  The students looked great in their western wear and were super excited to watch the movie.  So far we've been able to spot a few differences between the movie and book!  Thank goodness I've never had to deal with a student sneaking a live piglet into their desk!

In Science we've been testing cereal to look for iron.  We've discovered that yes indeed cereal does have iron in it.  Our school magnets are not the strongest so the test has been a bit challenging.  This is an experiment that your child can do at home with you.

Here are some pictures form today!  I won't thank  everyone individually for their efforts but boy oh boy you impressed all of the teachers and support staff at E.G who took a moment to stop by and look at the snacks!  We could almost open up a bakery with your creativity.

Dec. 1st Magnets, Soccer and Mrs.Nasr's Baby

To we hosted Magnetic Al from Teacher's Pet. He put on a fun, interactive and educational presentation on magnets.  The students loved trying to magnetize thinking putty, predict if objects were magnetic and most of all make dogs parks with a toy dog and magnet wand.

We've also been learning about magnets in the world around us and different places they can be found.

Special Question:

Where is 1 place you can see a magnet in the world?

Both yesterday and today we had to juggle with our gym schedule.  It was a bit chilly but the class managed a quick game of soccer in the frost. Before the soccer game Mrs.Nasr stopped by with baby Celine to see us!
