Skating and Hot Chocolate Party

Happy long weekend!

Thank you parents and Nana Kate for all of your volunteerism this week.  Mrs.Law (Ashlyn, Lucas and Trenton Law's Mom) hosted a hot chocolate party for both grade 1/2 classes and Mrs.Scherschel's classes this afternoon.  The class filled up on cookies, hot chocolate and marshmallows before skating.  The amount of growth in the beginning skaters over the 4 days was tremendous!  Thank you for having your child(ren) prepared with the proper equipment all week long.

Enjoy reading your report cards over with your child(ren).  Please remember that it is a reflection for the first 5 months of school and not just the past month.

Poetry Reading, Skating, and BME

Today we began our story writing unit.  We read the story "Little Dog Lost" and deconstructed it into the Beginning, Middle and End parts.  In our own words we retold the story.

In Math we played Power of 9 and Power of 10.  We practiced the days of the week, months of the year and answered questions about the Jan. calendar (how many Tuesdays will there be in Jan, how many days until Feb. begins?).  The grade 2 are practicing double digit addition each day.  We expand the numbers, use a number line and do the good old fashion re-grouping method.

In Science we looked at different heat sources in our school and home.

Power of 10, Poetry Reading and Hot and Cold

It's report card week!  Report cards go home on Thursday.  Please make sure that you go over the report card with your child, I know that we can get caught up in the numbers but the comments are very important and explain your child's progress.

Dates for the week:
Monday-Skating 1:00-2:00pm
Tuesday- Skating 2:15-3:15pm
Wednesday-Skating 1:00-2:00pm
Thursday- 7 Habits morning assembly, Fun Lunch, skating 2:15-3:15pm, report cards go home
Friday- NO SCHOOL
Feb. 12th- Science Fair

Skating this week.  Please bring; helmet, skates, mittens, and snow pants.  We now have many volunteers for each day which will really help with getting the kids onto the ice.  Volunteers do not have to skate or go onto the ice. Volunteers MUST wear a helmet if they are on the ice, this includes walking on the ice too.

In Math we are focussing on adding up to 20 in grade 1 and 100 in grade 2.  We have been playing power of 10 and power of 9 with the power of 10 cards.  This helps to increase our number recognition, addition speed and addition accuracy.

In Science we have begun our Hot and Cold unit. We have talked about things being "hot, cold, or air temperature".  This week we will look at sources of heat (the sun, fossil fuels, our bodies, friction, and fire).

In Social Studies we have begun looking at 3 Canadian Communities.  On Friday students got to look at pictures of Iqaluit, Meteghan, and Saskatoon.  We will be studying the people, jobs, natural resources, traditions, languages and early beginnings of these communities.

In Language Arts we have written another partner poem called "Walter", all of the poems are displayed in the classroom or hallways.  Students have also been working in pairs to read a poem to the class using expression, fluency, and a clear voice.

Physical Education has us rolling, balancing, and moving all over the mats and equipment.  This week we explore on the climber and trestles.  Next week will be the culmination with Mission Impossible.
