Hello May!

How wild is this Calgary weather?  We welcomed May with snow, in the early Acadian Days the French settlers would have caught and bottled this snow.

Sneaky question....Write the answer in your agenda.

Why did the Acadian people catch snow flakes on the first snow or May?  What did the Acadians use the snow for?

Social Studies- Students are creating travel brochures for each of the 3 Canadian Communities we are studying.  Beginning with Meteghan we are focusing on; celebrations, traditions, natural resources, languages, things to do, and foods.

Science- We will be beginning our new unit on Small and Flying Insects. Students will learn about how insects can both be helpful and harmful.  They will learn how to identify and describe insects and arachnids.

Math-  We are wrapping up addition and subtraction (but will continue to review it daily) and are moving onto measurement.  Grade 1s will focus on non-standard units of measurement while grade 2s will use both non and standard units of measurement.

All EG students are continuing to work on their Math Fair projects.

Examples of non-standard- the desk was 12 pencils long OR the desk was 34 erasers long
Examples of standard- the desk was 67 cms long. The field was 23 meters wide.

Language Arts- Our newest writing will focus the persuasive style.  Examples of this would be writing letters to try to convince Mr.Lowe for a Pizza day, your parents to buy you a puppy, your teacher to give you an extra recess etc.  As well we will continue with our spelling, guided reading and morning message programs.
