Skating and Dominos for Math

We had a beautiful day for an outdoor skate!  Thank you to our volunteers (Tiernan's Dad,  Parker's Papa, and Alex's Mom for coming with us).  Miss.Dodd who has been a skating coach for nearly 10 years was able to come and help out our beginning skaters.

In Math we played 2 different games with dominos (a game for each grade).  The grade 2s are working on place value and the grade 1s are working on adding numbers to 12.  We continue to look at the calendar and now are beginning to look at the temperature.  It's been a challenge trying to grasp numbers that go below zero. 

In Language Arts we wrote about germs.  Some children wrote about ways to keep germs away and others wrote about ways to can get germs.  We ALL worked extra hard at washing our hands before snack and lunch today.

Math Games, Gym, Working with other classes and....homework!

Today we worked to support the kindergarten class in Math.  We tried to help them understand the difference between 81 and 18, 12 and 21 and so one.  This is also really good practice for the grade 1 students who often mix up their numbers.

We have begun double digit addition with the grade 2s and single digit addition with the grade 1s.  Please use the mathletics site to work on math facts (live mathletics).  Grade 2s make sure you click on the #2 star...you should be working on more challenging questions!

In Social Studies we were briefly introduced to 3 Canadian Communities.  We also tried to locate Alberta on a map of Canada.

Knut the Polar Bear

Today we read a non-fiction picture book called "Knut".  The story is about a little Polar Bear who is born in the Berlin Zoo.  Once the story was read we broke  it down into 3 parts, B-M-E.  Students then began to illustrate and write about all 3 of the parts. Soon we will begin writing our own stories!

In Math we worked on ordering numbers by both the number symbol and word.  We did this in teams of 2 as a race.  The grade 2s have begun looking at and working on double digit addition.  The grade 1s are working on "counting up" for addition.

In Science we have begun a new unit called "Hot and Cold".  We learned that a thermometer is the tool used to measure temperature.

Special Question -

What is one liquid that used to be inside of a thermometer?

O.T and Kananaskis in the Classroom

This week we have been fortunate to have some excellent guest speakers.  Yesterday our schools occupational therapist (Ms.Stephanie) came to our class she discussed little problems with big reactions and what an appropriate reaction should be. We got to act some little problems out and brainstormed what expected behavior/responses should be. She will continue the series next Friday morning.

Today we had Kananaskis in the Classroom come and present in the gym for us.  We learned that invasive plants are the only plants allowed to be picked when visiting Kananaskis Country.  There were 3 plants in particular that we learned about.

Oxeye Daisy - spreads over 100 seeds to spread itself across the land.

Toadflax -  chokes out other plants, steals their water and nutrients.

Creeping Thistle - It's roots can go 4 1/2m down and 6m across to invade and steal native plants soil and habitat.
