Apple Witch Dolls, Foxes and Seniors

Happy October Families!

It's been a short but busy week here at school.  Thank you to all of the parents who took the time to help out with the apple witch doll making.

In literacy we've begun our "I see, I think, I wonder" writing which helps to develop our writing, observing and communication skills.  We've also continued procedural writing where we wrote the steps to make an apple witch doll.  Our guided reading groups have been finalized so that guided reading may begin.

In Math the grade 2s and 3s continue to work on different strands of the curriculum.  The grade 3s have a Patterns Unit test on Monday and the grade 2s had a mini test on addition and number words last week.

Our Grandparent Project has begun and today we kicked it off with a talk about "Old People".  Mrs.Scherschel's class joined our class for the introductory lesson.  I asked the classes what they knew about "old people".  The responses were for the most part pretty negative and made seniors sound like a burden.  Over the next couple of months we hope to change the thinking and stereo types around senior citizens.  Seniors are an important part of society with experiences behind them and stories and wisdom to share.  We look forward to sharing "Grandparent Day" with you on Nov. 13th.

An extra special thank you to Norn who taught all of the students how to make an origami fox.  We wrote "I am" poems about the fox from the Wild Robot.  The origami foxes are hanging with our poems in the hallway.
