Terry Fox

Today during Math we subitized.  This is when students get to see a matrix of circles or triangles for a split second 3 separate times.  The students have to make a picture in their head and then add it up.  Subitizing works to support very quick addition and recognizing groups of numbers without having to count or add.  I have put 2 samples below.

In the morning we learned all about Terry Fox.  Students wrote about why and how he tried to help fellow Canadians.

Sneaky Blog Question of the day: What are 1 or 2 things that you can remember about Terry Fox?

Parent Communication

Thank you for checking in with our classes blog!

I will use the blog to communicate upcoming dates, talk about learning at school and show student work.  The student work piece (pictures) is key.  How many times has your child answered "I don't know what we did at school today or I can't remember or we didn't do anything"?   Our school days are long, the children get tired and sometimes they really do forget.  Please use the pictures to help guide conversations about student learning.

Welcome to the 2018/2019 School Year!

Hello parents and students,

If you're reading this then you've found our classes blog.  I will use the blog to let you know what we've been up to in class and to give you a heads up on upcoming events.

This week we have begun to explore the question "What is our mark on planet Earth".  This will be a guiding question that we examine throughout the entire school year.  It will also support our work at Zoo School (room #2 has the same guiding question as our class).  We have discussed and looked at pictures of water bodies, plants and trees, air pollution and loss of animal habitat.  The goal is for our students to come up with a conservation project that will impact a group of animals or area/species of plants.

Also this week we have begun to learn about each other with our "All About Me" bags.  We have learned that we are a multi talented group of students;
-magicians
-travellers
-sand castle builders
-gymnasts
-interested in animals (Chinook the bear from the San Diego Zoo)
-lacrosse players
-flamingo lovers
-Captain Underpants enthusiasts
-princess experts
-have parents that have gone back to school
-rock collectors
-chocolate lovers
-taekwondo masters
and much, much more.

Thank you for helping your child with this activity it has been a lot of fun so far!
