The last 6 days have been spent focusing on Remembrance Day,
the meaning of peace, and why as Canadians we are thankful. We’ve spent sometime reading picture books
that are based on true stories. Our
class has been engrossed in these books and have asked for more. We’ve read Angel Girl, Gifts from the Enemy, and
Luba: The Angel of Bergen-Belsen. We met
with the grade 5 class to write letters to soldiers, made beautiful poppies and
have talked about the Central Memorial Cenotaph. Earl Grey's Remembrance Day Ceremony is at
10:30am on Thursday, everyone is welcome to attend.
In Math we’ve begun taking a closer look at numbers. We played a game where students have to guess
the magic number by only asking yes or no questions. For example, “is your number even, is it
greater than 60”? Students keep asking
until they’ve got the number correct. We
are looking at the relationship between numbers. Ie 80 is 15 less than 95, 25
is halfway between 0 and 50. This helps
students place numbers on a number line and understand their value.
Gym class has become a real workout for some of the
kids. We’ve been working on bounce
passes, chest passes and shooting with a basketball. Today we attempted our first basketball game.
I’ve got to say that some of the grade 1 boys and a couple of the grade 2s are
ultra competitive. It was impressive to
see that no one hogged the ball and all of the players passed to teammates. The green pickles led the tomatoes with a score
of 10-6 today. Parker led the scoreboard
with 6 points for the Pickles.
