Visit from Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities

This morning our class was honored to have Mr.Hehr talk to us about citizenship.  He made some great points for the kids.  He asked if any were involved in Scouts, Girl Guides, team sports, or school reading programs and explained that without these volunteers the programs wouldn't exist.  He explained that volunteering comes full circle and helps to create a happier society.

We asked him what an engaged citizen looks like, his response was
Engaged citizens;
-vote
-try to understand others before judging and responding
-help each other out
-participate in community events and are thankful for the opportunity
-think of others and try not to be selfish
-are thankful for the opportunities they have been given

He told us a funny story about being flexible.  When he was 18 he was cut from the Moose Jaw Warriors WHL team.  The coach said "you're good but not good enough, here's a hotdog and a roadmap and be on your way".  The lesson he learned as an 18 year old has served him well.  He has learned how to accept change graciously and be thankful for the opportunities given. He then told of his meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier this year when Mr.Trudeau said "thank you for your good work as Minister of Veterans Affairs Minister and now here is your new position as Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities".  The lessons we learn in our early years will serve us well throughout life.

We all enjoyed listening to Mr.Hehr and are thankful for his visit.

The rest of the day we;
-completed our Calgary Silhouettes
-finished writing our Terry Fox "Recipe for Success" writing
-worked in our Gratitude books
-went to Music
-did a cosmic kids "Alice in Wonderland" yoga for gym
-worked on sorting in Math

Sneaky Homework

  1. We sort things out like this: utensil trays for forks, spoons, knives and bigger spoons and bigger forks. We do garbage like this: first bags under the kitchen sink we use white and black bags for garbage, blue bags for recycling, compost bags for composting. The bags go in the garbage drawer it has two baskets for garbage. The drawer beside it has two baskets, one for composting and one for recycling. My room sorts out like this. Hockey cards go in my Hockey binders... I have two hockey binders and then I put it on my shelves where all my types of binders go. My baseball binder I do the same thing with it but I put it under my Hockey binders. With my Pokemon binder I put it at the very bottom. I also still need a football binder because I sort my football cards. We sort our important papers in the kitchen drawer. From Blu

  5. Wow Parker, boys and girls? Your Mom is never going to get a fair vote (if it was a girls vs boys vote). But then again if it was a girls bathroom and boys bathroom she would definitely come out the winner! Thanks for blogging!
