Wednesday February 1st

This morning we wrote about groundhogs, it's amazing how quickly the children can pick up facts and re-tell/re-write them in their own words.  Some of the grade 1s had prompts to support them in their writing.  The prompts helped to guide the students and give them ideas with their writing.  They were;
-A groundhog eats
-A groundhog lives
-A groundhogs special skills

I know a few students were so proud of their work that they brought it home to share.

In Math the grade 1s worked on problem solving using tallies as their strategy.  I was so impressed with our students because half way through the problems switched from addition to subtraction.  The kids picked up on this on their own. ie. There were 10 kids in line, 5 gave up and left, how many kids are in line?

The grade 2s worked on solving riddles.  They had to follow instructions by either changing a number in the 10s or 1s column.  This was pretty tricky for everyone!  We went over our responses so that students would get immediate feedback.

In Science we conducted a little experiment.  We wanted to investigate different areas of the school and see what the temperatures in these areas were. We broke up into 2 groups and headed off with thermometers in hand.  As we conducted the experiments we learned that areas near the windows were the coldest.  We also learned that the areas between the front door and second door were quite warm.

Helene and Leonie are celebrating their 6th birthdays next Monday.  They will be busy at Disneyland but brought in birthday cupcakes to share today.  We were also able to use the cupcakes as a part of our "Mannequin Challenge".  The whole school is taking part in this challenge as a segment in the morning news.  The video below is what we videoed today.

Question of the day!

Why were the areas by the windows the coldest?

  1. Beside a window it is more cold because a window is never going to be good at insulation. -David

  2. Because the window is colder because there is cold air coming in from the outside.

  4. A window is made of glass and the cold air can sneak in because it isn't a good insulator. Other areas are good insulators are good insulators, for instance, the middle of the school. The gym might be a little cold because it is close to a door. - Parker
